7 Signs You Don’t Have Work-life Balance as a High-Achieving Working Parent (and What To Do About It)

If you're reading this, then you're most likely a working professional who's a high achiever . You like to give your best in everything you do. The problem is we live in a highly connected and competitive world, and we only have 24 hours a day. Sometimes this can mean we're working round the clock, trying to do everything and be everything to everyone. The constant demand for your time and attention can lead to high stress levels, decreased  work performance and  relationship problems. You could be headed for burnout .

But how do you know if you're overworking or just hardworking ? What are warning signs you're off balance?

7 Signs You’re Losing Work–Life Balance (and What To Do)

Here are 7 signs that you don't have work life balance as a high-achieving working parent and what to do about it.

  1. Constant fatigue and burnout: If you’re always tired and stressed, it may be a sign that you are not balancing your work and personal life.

  2. Difficulty disconnecting from work: If you find yourself thinking about work even when you are not on the clock, it’s a sign that your work-life balance is off. You need to set better boundaries between your work and personal life.

  3. Lack of time for self care : High-achieving working mothers and working fathers often need to pay more attention to their own needs for self-care, such as exercise , hobbies, and socialising. If you struggle to prioritise your physical and mental health , you are trying to do too much at once.

  4. Neglecting family and personal relationships: High achievers may be so focused on their careers that they neglect their relationships with family and friends.

  5. Increased feelings of guilt : If you feel guilty about not spending enough time with your family or being unable to fully commit to your work, it may be a sign that you need to find a better balance.

  6. Difficulty managing stress : High-stress levels can indicate that you’re not effectively managing your work load and responsibilities. If you’re having trouble sleeping and regularly using alcohol or recreational drugs to unwind, it may be a sign that you’re overwhelmed and overworked. Unmanaged stress can lead to decreased work performance, increased relationship strains and burnout.

  7. Physical symptoms of stress: If you are experiencing physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach issues, or muscle tension, it may be a sign that you are not achieving a balance between your work and personal life.

To improve your work-life balance, try setting clear boundaries between work and personal life, delegating tasks when possible, and making time for yourself and your loved ones.

Are you struggling to achieve work-life balance (work-life harmony or work-life integration)? If you answered “Yes”, it may be time to consider working with me. As a medical doctor and Work-Life Balance coach , I can help you with strategies such as:

  • Get clear on your priorities and goals

  • Set and stick to your boundaries.

  • Delegate without feeling bad about it.

  • Manage your stress in healthy ways.

  • Ruthlessly prioritise self care, so you show up as the best version of yourself at work and home.

Remember that balancing these different aspects of life is a continuous process that requires flexibility and self awareness. So, be kind to yourself and don’t be too hard on yourself if things don’t go as planned. And if you feel overwhelmed, you can seek help from a therapist, counsellor or your doctor who can help you to develop strategies to balance your responsibilities.
